Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen
has a certain characteristic pace to it, as does an international
football game: fast, competitive and very intense. Gordon moves
the fastest, 'at 150mph' some might say. It's a formidable sight,
unstoppable, the momentum of the stocky ex-Glasgow Rangers footballer
in the role of chef patron within the confines of a kitchen. If,
however, the image of a bull in a china shop springs to mind this
would be quite wrong. Gordon Ramsay is without doubt a big chap,
but as a chef he is more like a ballet dancer, always on his toes
as he pirouettes round the pots and pans. Paradoxically, it usually
takes a few strong expressos to bring Gordon down after a busy
service and, while I was painting there, it was during such coffee
rituals that I tended to get the chance to talk with him.
